Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial

  • The national memorial's Visiting Time is from 10:00 A.M to 07:00 P.M. The memorial is closed on Monday for maintenance.
  • Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, after his resignation from the Union Council of Minister as Minister of Law, vacated his official residence at 1, Harding Avenue, New Delhi and shifted to a Bungalow at 26, Alipur Road, Delhi, on 1st November, 1951 and lived there till he breathed his last on 6th December, 1956
  • The land at 26, Alipur Road, Delhi is considered as a sacred place as a Parinirvan Sthal. There has been a long standing demand from various corners for converting the place into a befitting National Memorial.
  • Setting up of Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial at 26, Alipur Road, Delhi, where Babasaheb Dr. B.R.Ambedkar had breathed his last, was one of the important decisions taken by the Centenary Celebrations Committee of Babasaheb headed by the then Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
  • The Government of India had initiated the process to reconstruct a well-designed and fully developed Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial at 26, Alipur Road, Delhi. On the advice of Ministry of Urban Development the work had been entrusted to Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
  • The total area of the plot is 7,374 sq metres and the built up area is 4561.62 sq metres excluding basement parking. The memorial consists of one basement for car parking, Lower Ground Floor, Upper Ground Floor and First Floor in accordance with the building by Laws and height restrictions. The total areas are as:

  • The maximum permissible height is 11 metres. The Memorial will have themed Garden, Entrance Plaza, Surface Parking, Service Area, Meditation Hall, Memorial Plaque, Pavilion and Basement Parking. The other components of the Memorial include a small area at the entrance to the building, with a capacity of 80-100 with chairs for a 5 minute orientation session about the Memorial and an area dedicated for those who want to do meditation.
  • The activities undertaken at the Memorial are (i) organizing Birth and Mahaparinirvan anniversaries (ii) Lectures (iii) discussions (iv) exhibitions (v) cultural activities related to, in particular, young people etc.
  • The Hon'ble Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial, 26, Alipur Road, Delhi and delivered 6th Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Lecture on 21st march, 2016 in the presence of the Hon'ble Minister (SJ&E) and Hon'ble Minister (S&T and Earth Sciences) in a function held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
